More History Day Photos

History Days are soooo much FUN! Since I'm behind on blogging I am putting up pictures from several different times that we got together.

Reports

Each time we gather someone shares a report. They can report on anything that interests them from the WWII time period. I cannot believe how much I've learned. In some events you could see the hand of the Lord so clearly.

"The LORD sat as King at the flood;
Yes, the LORD sits as King forever. " Psalm 29: 10

For some of the kids who haven't had gavel club, it wasn't very easy to get up in front of everyone. But they did a fabulous job!

Although you can not see it well, Haley also made a woman's suit from a pattern of that time period. It was really hard to make. It required all sorts of techniques that I had only learned when I took a tailoring course in college. She did a great job and I am so proud of her.

Cartooning

Melody graciously came and taught a class on cartooning. She is not only a gifted artist, but an excellent teacher. (You know that the Lord will use that in her family and in the Body of Christ) I sure wish her family lived closer. Think of all the wacky(and educational) things we could do?!?
Thank you Melody!

Susan brought samples of cartoons from WWII. Here's one that she shared with the kids:

Crystal Radios!

Well we tried to build radios! We'll just leave it at that. I do think that the Barnard's got theirs to work thanks to Dave.

Silly Putty!

This was truly an experiment.
Nate said we'd have to mix it
for a long time.

45 minutes later it still wasn't
anything but liquid.

Jason and Katrina came later and got in on the middle of the mixing. They got the last bottle of glue which happened to be the Elmer's brand glue. Glue is glue right?? WRONG. At least not when it comes to making Silly Putty.

In less than 10 minutes their mixture began to "gel". Harrumph. Don't try this with inexpensive glue.

Although it was still a bit sticky it was well worth the experiment. We talked about a whole bunch of things that were invented during WWII.
Next time you eat MM's think WWII.

Here's the recipe:

Silly Putty
1 cup Liquid Starch(available in Grocery Stores)
2 cups Elmer's all-purpose Glue
3 drops Food Coloring
Large heavy duty Zip Lock bags

Put all ingredients into the bag. Lock the bag. Carefully squish the contents together. Don't pop the bag. When mixed add food coloring.
To keep it from drying out store in a baggie.

Ration Stamp Cafe
We ate at a special cafe for lunch. Everything here had to be "purchased" with ration stamps.

The ration prices on each item reflect how easy or difficult it would have been to get these goodies.

Some things we just plain didn't have enough of. You wanted to be in line first to have the best selection. Some of our stamps even ran out at a certain time that day! Yikes!

Our Cafe Lady noticed the service men and announced that they always get preferential treatment and got to go first! Yay

You paid with the stamps in your ration book. Although this was not really how rationing worked at the time, it gave us a tiny taste of the concept.

It's great to be able to find copies of the real things online. These are based on the real things as well as we could. Each student had their own book.

Puzzle Quiz

We had a puzzle quiz based on the life of a war correspondant. If you answered the questions correctly the answers made a poster of his life and the books he authored.

Games of the Times

Spam
We did indeed eat Spam! We ate it straight from the can (like the soldiers in the battlefield). We ate it in a recipe broiled on toast and we ate it fried!

Fried was the favorite method. The boys loved it!!

Here is a brief Spam history from the official Spam site.

Hormel Spiced Ham got off to a slightly rocky start. Other meatpackers began to introduce their own canned luncheon meats, and Hormel lost its controlling share of the market. Soon, however, they came up with a cunning plan to rectify this situation - they would give Hormel's luncheon meat a truly catchy name. Toward this end, they offered $100 for a suitable appellation. The winning name was, of course, ''SPAM'', and a legend was born.

  • SPAM was launched with much high-profile advertising in mid-1937. It was called ''the Miracle Meat'', and promoted as an anytime meat.
  • In 1940, SPAM was the subject of quite possibly the first singing commercial. The jingle was to the tune of the chorus of ''My Bonny Lies Over The Ocean'', and the lyrics were ''SPAM SPAM SPAM SPAM/ Hormel's new miracle meat in a can/ Tastes fine, saves time./ If you want something grand,/ Ask for SPAM!''.
  • Hormel also sponsored George Burns' and Gracie Allen's network radio show, which included ''Spammy the Pig''.
  • During World War II, sales boomed. Not only was SPAM great for the military, as it required no refrigeration, it wasn't rationed as beef was, so it became a prime staple in American meals.
  • SPAM supported the war effort more directly, too. Nikita Kruschev credits SPAM with the survival of the Russian Army during WWII.
  • This one is hilarious! During the late 1940s and early 1950s, the Hormel Girls performing troupe advertised SPAM as they performed throughout the country, distributed SPAM door-to-door, and even had a national weekly radio show. Ads proclaimed, ''Cold or hot, SPAM hits the spot!''

I couldn't resist this cartoon. I'm putting it here especially for our Grandfathers' enjoyment. =)

Radio Drama

We are producing a radio drama. We found the scripts of old time radio programs online!

We found a Fibber McGee and Molly drama. Fibber goes through his "closet" for the scrap drive. It's so fun.

The Library has some cd's of one of the Fibber McGee and Molly programs. The music was big band and it helped us all to get the idea. We hope to do a few of our own commercials also.
The kids are even making their own sound effects. Once Nate gets home we will record the whole thing!

Off to Wisconsin

Nate has escaped to Wisconsin. Fishing, hiking, climbing . . . . . . . well no. (well maybe??) He's up with the Filmweaver group shooting pick-ups for the movie The Penny.

I think that involves shooting scenes that they need to add or that they need to redo. I'm not exactly sure. I guess I'll find out next time he calls.

I couldn't post about Nate without a picture. I just don't have any of him with his sound gear and I didn't take one before he left. So I stuck this picture in. I bet he's not dressing like this up there at all. "smile"

You have to check out www.Filmweavers.com to follow their progress. They also have put up a visual trailer. It looks great!

Haley said that the trailer made her really curious! Especially since Nate couldn't tell us anything . . . . how awful!!

Easter 2009

This year our Easter celebration was fairly quiet. We had just gotten back from Branson the night before so we didn't do our usual decorating etc. The Jones were in town and G&G Sisson invited us to their house for Sunday dinner.

Grandma and Lisa

Tim and Andrew catching up.

Becca and Haley were talking dress design/costuming from colonial times.

No one makes gravy like Dad.

Kay made the best roast lamb. Here is Tom carving it. She also made the most delicious roasted broccoli. I'm including the recipe for GJ. Everyone raved about it.

Parmesan-Roasted Broccoli
  • 4 to 5 pounds broccoli
  • 4 garlic cloves, peeled and thinly sliced
  • Good olive oil
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 2 teaspoons grated lemon zest
  • 2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 3 tablespoons pine nuts, toasted
  • 1/3 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese
  • 2 tablespoons julienned fresh basil leaves (about 12 leaves)

Directions

Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F.

Cut the broccoli florets from the thick stalks, leaving an inch or two of stalk attached to the florets, discarding the rest of the stalks. Cut the larger pieces through the base of the head with a small knife, pulling the florets apart. You should have about 8 cups of florets. Place the broccoli florets on a sheet pan large enough to hold them in a single layer. Toss the garlic on the broccoli and drizzle with 5 tablespoons olive oil. Sprinkle with the salt and pepper. Roast for 20 to 25 minutes, until crisp-tender and the tips of some of the florets are browned.

Remove the broccoli from the oven and immediately toss with 1 1/2 tablespoons olive oil, the lemon zest, lemon juice, pine nuts, Parmesan, and basil. Serve hot.

Matthew loves the pooches. He kept them busy with their "squirrel".

There was a lot of hugging going on "happy sigh".

Death is swallowed up in victory. Jesus is alive!

Our Beloved Brother

A couple of weeks ago we got to visit with our beloved brother Najah.
It was so nice. We get so busy, I forgot how much we miss him. NO ONE can make us all laugh like he does.

Of course what is the first thing that you do when you haven't seen someone in a while??

If you are 13 and Matthew this is it . . . . . . . . . . . . .

May (the Lord) grant you your heart's desire,
And fulfill all your counsel!
We will sing for joy over your victory,
And in the name of our God we will set up our banners.
May the LORD fulfill all your petitions.

Throwed Rolls

Several of us had our first trip to Lambert's Cafe last night. They advertise that they are the home of the throwed rolls! What? I'm a Mom, you don't play with your food. Hum.

Uh oh. They are throwing things . . . . . . . . . . . . food!
Actually I've been to Lamberts before. This was Alaina and her Great Grandparent's first visit.

They come around with big pots and in addition to your entree they offer all sorts of yummy things. (fried okra being one)

This is Grandpa's kind of restaurant, all-you-can-eat! Grandma is trying to figure out how to keep him from exploding. "wink"

They walk around with these HUGE warm from the oven rolls. If you want one you hold up your hand and they toss it to you. Thus the claim for throwed rolls.

One of the waitresses asked Haley and Nate if they were twins!
Then she asked if Haley was older?! Ha Ha.

After you've stuffed yourself they have professional rollers who roll you back to your car! "wink"
We unanimously suggest that you go there sometime. Try not to eat for at least a day in advance. Give us a shout, we'd love to join you. "grin"

Family Togetherness

Greetings from Missouri!
We are thrilled to be experiencing a little family togetherness.

We are excited that Kyle, Gretchen and Alaina are able to be with us. I don't think that little Alaina will be put down for a single moment. We all fight over holding, burping, diapering, entertaining and anything else with her.

Gretchen and grandma cooking for the crew. Yum!

Four Men on the Couch?---No.

I am blogging away from home for the first time! Hooray!
I am using a Mac to post for the first time! UGH
(I can't figure out how to move my pictures around so I'm leaving them where they are. Yikes. I apologize in advance.)

We're staying in a beautiful home that's located on an 850 acre working cattle ranch.

Her Royal Chubbiness! Maybe I should call her our entertainment. She is so sweet and changing each time we see her. Right now she's swiping at things with her hands. She's as smiley as she can be and is soooooo close to laughing, it won't be long now.

Grandpa Bud and the guys have so enjoyed playing pool. Matthew is learning and thrives on the competition. Grandpa loves beating everyone!

There is a spacious fully "furnished" kitchen so we brought all our own food and are cooking together. We never have to go out if we don't want to. (We have heard that there is an Lambert's cafe not far away. We have to go out at least once.)

Here is Haley's little bedroom nook at the bottom of the stairs.

Sincere Apology

Hello !

It's been a whole month since I posted last. sigh

Official Excuse: I have been very busy (and missing you all. . . . . . . .really).

Official Proof: If you'd like to see what's been monopolizing my time please go to :
www.iche.org and click on convention or upcoming events.
{I also had the stomach flu. Said in a pathetic quavery voice.}

I was very involved in producing the brochure and also the convention part of the site. "happy happy smile"

(The brochure is on the convention site in it's entirety and you can look it over or download it if you so choose.)

Grace Extended??

After this brief intermission, it's time to get back to blogging the fun family things of our lives. I'll be putting up more from this remote location in a little while! "happy smile"

Curious??
